Oat Varieties
Oats can be grown across a wide range of environments and offer a range of uses and markets to growers. There are varieties suited to grazing, silage and hay production, feed grain and milling grain. Most feed grain types suit hay or silage and dual purpose varieties can be grazed and then locked up for the grain or hay crop. Milling varieties are often 'dwarf' or 'semi dwarf' and these varieties are unsuitable for hay or silage, although they can be blended with hay varieties to produce higher quality hay. There are large differences between oat varieties and attention should be payed to selecting the right variety for your situation.
